Review: Hollywood Heroine (Heroine Complex #5) by Sarah Kuhn
Hi Readers,
Have you read the Heroine Complex series from Sarah Kuhn? The first book in the series Heroine Complex was the first e-book I picked up when I finally dipped my toes into that Kindle life. It was fun, empowering, and so good that I've continued to follow the series.
If you have not read any of this series, it follows Evie Tanaka and Aveda Jupiter (Annie Chang) as they fight demons and save the city of San Francisco after gaining abilities like some of the other residents. These two Asian American superheroes have been battling some demons since book 1. Literal demons. Sometimes in the form of cupcakes. Did I mention this series is a lot of fun? Over the course of the series they have grown so much, with both falling in love and getting married. (If you're a spice lover, then there are some good love scenes with their partners). Evie and her husband Nate in the 5th book are now having a baby together and his mother (a demon!) wants the baby. Aveda Jupiter and Scott are deeply in love and definitely cute. Evie's sister Bea is another leading lady in the series and was raised by Evie and off exploring her abilities in her own adventures.
The books have rotated points of view between Evie, Aveda, and Bea over the course of the series. My personal favorite has been Evie's point of view and her falling in love with Nate. The 5th book is through the Aveda Jupiter lens and all that comes with. She is a strong, multitasking female superhero, who is suffering from some exhaustion and struggle with change in this book. Evie, Aveda, and their assistant Pippa head to Los Angeles in this book to consult on the creation of a superhero show based on their lives. The show is ridiculous and somehow now contains vampires, despite them never fighting vampires in their superheroing exploits. Which then turns into a new mission in Los Angeles...investigating vampires.
I love these books and I can't wait to read the final book in the series Holiday Heroine that just came out this week. These are fun and I really love the growth each of the characters has undergone throughout the course of the series. I'm also excited to shift back to Bea's perspective and see what she has been up to when she is not in San Francisco with the team. While I really loved the fifth book, I will say, I don't think it was the strongest in the series. It felt like it moved a little bit slow to me and with Evie and Aveda located away from San Francisco, there were less interactions with the other members of the team, who I missed. It was part of the story, I can't complain and I understand the shift for this one, but I still missed them.
For me this one was 4/5⭐
I hope my rambling encourages someone to pick up this series and enjoy it as much as I have!
Kattie
