Review: Daisy Jones and The Six (may contain spoilers)
Hi Readers,
My first read of August was Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This was definitely a slower read for me and probably not the strongest way to start the month. I really struggled to get in to this one and I really think it was the faux documentary format that was throwing me off. The last third of the book is what I found most interesting, the rest all felt like it was a slow burn to me.
The book focused on Daisy Jones and a 70s band called The Six. At the simplest, this was a story about the struggles of a rock and roll band on their journey to the top. Along the way, Daisy Jones joins the band and she is as much electric with the lead singer as she is volatile to herself. Lead singer Billy encounters the struggle of staying sober for his family while Daisy is constantly high and when they come together to write they can make a successful album.
While the main story focuses quite a bit on Billy and Daisy, other members of the band struggle as well. They struggle with control, unrequited love, and even abortion. This was a well rounded cast of characters and each was well written.
Favorite quote from the book:
"CAMILA: It's not my place to say what happened that day. All I will say is that you show up for your friends on their hardest days. And you hold their hands through the roughest parts. Life is about who is holding your hand and, I think, whose hand you commit to holding (p. 302)."
My GoodReads Rating: 4/5⭐
I initially gave the book a 3, but I went back and revised it to a 4 after thinking about the book as a whole. While I was not a fan of the format style, it did make it unique and you can see the clear intent with the writing.
Until next time readers,
Kattie
